Executive Coaching| What makes a good Coach?

Executive Coaching | Top Coaches

A good coach, like a good boss or good sales person, will tend to emerge rather than be ‘trained’.

While they may have come from a variety of coaching backgrounds they will have a passion to stay at the top of their profession and continually update their skills. They have the advantage that they will learn new models and approaches from their clients.

The ideal coach might display:

1) A curiosity and passion towards empowering people to solve their own problems and achieve their own goals. Whilst also the ability to ‘shut up’ and let the client think.
2) A proactive approach directed towards outcomes rather than a prescriptive method.
3) The ability to empathise with their client while not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with them.
4) Behavioral flexibility. Being happy to explore different approaches with their client, rather than ‘forcing’ one methodology upon them.
5) A well-developed perception of their client’s unconscious signals.
6) An experience of having modelled high performance within the field that he or she is coaching.
7) A knowledge of best the coaching approaches.
8) An in depth understanding of disciplines such as Cognitive Psychology and NLP.
9) An understanding of how to establish effective feedback systems so that client can accurately measure progress.
10) An understanding of both the direction and current culture of the organisation.
